McLuhan

I was really a rough time understanding HIM!
"McLuhan"
I was like who the hell was him and why is him related to media.

So i did some research on youtube and google it.
Then, i only understand why.
He came out of the sentence:
"Medium was the message".
It gave me a rough idea on what is it all about.
In his thoughts, he thinks that no matter what form of medium that you using,
it could be one of the message.

For example, couple use clothes to send the message to be others that they are in LOVE
or
In A RELATIONSHIP.

The designer break the word soul mate into two shirt so when the couple stands together,
the word combines and make sense.
Cool right? XD

This is another one which the couple needs to stand beside to show the connection
between both shirt which is a shoe lace which tied together as one.
<3333

Another example that i can think of was a song name Pray sang by Justin bieber.

This song is all about praying for the poor, for the unfortunate people, disable people and etc.
The lyrics are all positive and sending message to a lot of people that we should help those
people because some of them cant even effort to have a proper meal.
Every time i listen to this song,
it will touch my heart so much because I'm leaving in a family
which provides me love, school, food and all but sometime i will feel not enough.
But this song wakes me up every time.

I think from McLuhan point of view, i can say that his trying to say that message comes from anywhere.
It does not mean that radio, TV and internet only can share message,
but medium that is all around us.

Thanks to him. I get to understand more. <333

Intertextuality

What do i know about Intertextuality?
Hmmm....
Remix/ Cut and paste/ Combining different idea in one.

This is an image which is showing hip hop and ballet performing together.

Most of the people thought that ballet and hip hop dance cannot combine together.
WHO SAID THAT?
Nowadays, people usually combine stuff together as one.
That is no such thing as impossible.
This is to see how the person combine stuff.
By remixing or combining, there will be new elements coming out.

For example, Love the Way You Lie by Rihanna feat Eminem.
The original version of the song:

The remix version of the song:

There are two version of this song.
This is because when the original song was release,
it was a big hit around the world.
This song has earned him 6 awards and 17 other nominations around the world,
with the nominations of Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards,
MuchMusic Video Awards and others.
Because it was too popular around the world so they came out
with another version of the same song and
it also has become the HIT SONG for that period.

Heehee. XD
That is how i understand the word Intertextuality.
By showing the creativeness on remixing but keeping the originality of the thing.

Structuralism

On our fourth lesson, we learn about structuralism. I always heard all these term during my History of Art class but i never knew that this term is actually relevant to media.

As we normally know, structuralism came from the word "structure".  The meaning of that is how we categories or build up our ideas. The ideas or stuff construct or structure very naturally. Structuralism can also be categories as linguistic, narratology and anthropology. We can structure our ideas by using diagrams, table, frames or in any way that we feel comfortable on and which can be differentiate.

In structuralism, there is a binary opposition of categorize which brings out the center part of both different categories.  Binary opposition put the words into categories then find the center part which relates to both of the categories. This is very interesting to me. This help me to understand how some of the ideas in the movie came from. For example, vampire categories in the middle of human and animal or alive and dead. I use illustrator to draw a diagram to let me understand further.

I also understand that post-structuralism also known as deconstruction. Deconstruction actually wants to show no different between both sides. They also categories it as 2 part but the center part, they try to think futher which is not only the equal side of both part.

Semiotics

Last week, I've learn about the term semiotics. This is a word which i always heard from my previous history class lecture during my foundation. When ever we tell him about our point of view of a painting, he will always says that " It is so SEMIOTIC". That is how this word got stuck in my head.

My definition of semiotic is about the interpretation of a symbol, sign etc. This is showing the way how you explain in your own. Different people have their own way of explaining. One symbol or sign can brings out different messages to different people. If you explain in a way which is different with others, others will said that it's very semiotics to explain that way.

This is one of the link which has an article about how semiotics relates to media. This is a very useful link which gave me a lot of theories or answer to my question.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), semiotics concerns with
1) “the branch of medical science relating to the interpretation of symptoms” and
2) “the science of communication studied through the interpretation of sign and symbols as they operate in various fields, esp. language.”

Semiotics relates to media by having communication from sign and symbols from our design. We sent our message through media as a designer. This is how semiotics come in media.

The basic concept of semiotic is the structure of a sign. In semiotics, sign has two categories which is signifier and signified. A signifier without signified has no meaning, and the signified changes with person and context. The relationship between the signifier and the signified is arbitrary.

This is what i have coop during the class last week. ^^

About Shanon and Weaver on communication

Is so hard for me to post anything the whole week because of the internet is slow in my area.

Last week, Daniel which is my lecture was teaching us about the process model of communication from Shanon and Weaver. There's a diagram which Daniel had thought us about was interesting to me. I found some of the image which is somehow related to each other.

3 of this diagrams look different but actually have a very similar meaning. Every communication starts from the information source/info source to the transmitter to the channel or signal and then to the receiver to the destination that the message or information that they want to send. Around this system, theres noise around it. The communication technology until now still using the same method because this is the basic fundamental that a communication media have.

The meaning of the noise to me is the disturbs-ion around the signal which somehow blog the signal all the way through the destination. I also learn about redundancy which is redundant information and entropy which is entropic information. I still working on the cybernetics and will post some interesting source next time. Is 3 and a half hour lecture, i'm trying hard to be alert.
